Meet Cara Gilbertson, Head of Seasonal Sales (Maternity Cover)
As Lauren prepares to welcome baby number two, we’re thrilled to have welcomed Cara Gilbertson to the team as her maternity cover.
HOW DID YOU START OUT IN THE INDUSTRY?
After my degree in Sport and Business, I worked in the events team for Thwaites (formerly Shire Hotels) as an Events Coordinator, quickly progressing to Events Office Manager. After this, I gained operational experience as a Wedding Coordinator and Duty Manager for a Lake District hotel before joining an end-to-end event management agency.
WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO SMART GROUP?
I moved to London 6 years ago, joining Concerto as an Account Manager before progressing to Head of Sales at The Collection, part of the WSH Group. I have worked with Smart Group for many years on behalf of clients doing my agency roles, and I have always seen Smart as a leader in the market and a company I really wanted to be part of. When this opportunity came up, I couldn’t say no as I wanted to broaden my knowledge and skills in venue sales and develop new and existing relationships.
WHAT IS YOUR IDEAL WAY TO SPEND A SUNDAY?
I enjoy going for walks in my home neighbourhood of Chiswick, followed by a hearty Sunday lunch with a nice glass of red wine. If i’m not in London, you’ll find me back up North with family, friends and my Patterdale Terrier, Frankie.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE LONDON VENUE?
My favourite London venue has got to be the Natural History Museum. Although a challenge to work at, the venue is one of London’s most iconic spaces. Luckily, Moving Venue are an accredited caterer there, so I’m sure I’ll be able to see lots of different events there!
YOU'VE BEEN INVOLVED WITH MANY EVENTS AT SMART, WHICH ONE WAS YOUR FAVOURITE?
During the COVID-19 pandemic, I was given the opportunity to take part in a live cook-a-long evening with Angela Hartnett and Greg. In such a difficult time for the hospitality industry, it really brought everyone together and kept spirits high. Plus, I made some amazing homemade pasta which was a first for me.
WHAT'S YOUR ADVICE FOR PEOPLE STARTING OUT IN THE INDUSTRY?
The key traits and skills I look for are perseverance, resilience, good communication and the willingness to grow a network from scratch. Work hard and you’ll play harder!
